After a three-year break, the Quad Cities Triathlon will return next summer.

It was canceled for 2020 through this year, not because of the pandemic, but because of the long restoration project at West Lake Park. But the lake is filling up, and should be ready for the event in June.

Race Director Eric Sarno says the first triathlon was held in 2,000, and grew from about 300 participants to 700 in 2019.

"I think I used to get concerned about other races and other events, but I think there's enough people looking for a variety of events to do that there seems to be - it doesn't really hurt our numbers."

He's not sure how many people might sign up but empasizes it'll be the same course in West Lake Park as in past years, and on the same weekend, Father's Day weekend in June.

"I love having it be the Quad Cities Triathlon because it truly is the Quad Cities Triathlon. The people who live here make up 70 per cent of our participants."

Registration for the June 17th Quad Cities Triathlon is now open, and Sarno thinks signing someone up for the event would make a great Christmas present.

The race features a 600 yard swim, 15 mile bike ride, and 5K run.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
