Vintage Football Returns to Rock Island

The Rock Island Independents face off against the Moline Universal Tractors in the 2021 game

The annual 1920s vintage football game will be played tomorrow between the Rock Island Independents and the Moline Universal Tractors.

The game will begin at 12:30 at Douglas Park in Rock Island, home of the Independents, a one-time member of the NFL.

Players will wear custom replica jerseys, leather helmets, and use a 1920s melon football.

Dan Gleason, from the Parks and Recreation Department says a goal of the game is to remind the community of the former NFL team based in Rock Island and the history of football.

"This just brings us back to our roots to really show the history of the game here in Rock Island and it just helps to keep the tradition alive, knowing Rock Island is one of the original hometowns of the NFl."

Douglas Park has undergone extensive renovations in recent years, which Gleasons says has allowed the city to take care of a park full of history.

"And having some just amazing athletes and hall-of-famers that are actually in the NFL hall of fame play on that field, it's just really cool to be able to have that."

Admission is free, and the game will be played rain or shine.
