City plans to add police officer to Rock Island High School

Rock Island High School
Rock Island School District
Rock Island High School

The City of Rock Island may provide a police officer to work at Rock Island High School this year.

Details about the position must be approved by the city council and Rock Island-Milan school board.

The "school resource officer" would enforce laws, like theft, vandalism, assault, and trespassing. They would also work on violence prevention, truancy cases, and make some home visits.

The agreement says the officer will not act--quote--"as an enforcer of school regulations, or in place of school-based mental health providers."

The officer would work during the 2023-2024 school year. They would report to the police chief and school principal.

The district hasn't staffed a school resource officer since 2021.
