Davenport West Begins $9 Million Project

Davenport Community Schools

Davenport high school students and members of the YMCA will benefit from a $9 million construction project.

On Tuesday, Davenport school and city officials held a groundbreaking for a new gymnasium at Davenport West High School.

The construction project doesn't stop there--it also includes a remodel of the existing gym, new bleachers, restrooms, a wrestling room, weight and fitness room, plus basketball and volleyball courts. The YMCA gym will also be remodeled to dedicate one court to the school.

Principal Cory Williams said the new facilities will mean students no longer have to go workout in the school's basement.

"There's going to be windows and they'll have a different place to practice, we can do games in two gyms at one time," she said. "I want our kids to be proud of West high school, so it's going to be nice to have really nice facilities that make you proud to be a Falcon."

The project will add over 25,000 square feet to the building and will cost over $9 million.
