Voters Reject School Bond Issues

Officials in three eastern Iowa school districts are going to have to find another way to pay for buliding improvements. On Tuesday, voters in Bettendorf, Calamus-Wheatland, and Durant all rejected bond issue requests.

The Bettendorf district wanted permission to borrow 69 million dollars to renovate the middle school and high school. But it failed with 59 per cent voting "no" and only 41 per cent voting "yes."

Unofficial results show the Calamus-Wheatland bond issue also failed with a 60 per cent "no"vote, and a much closer vote in the Durant district, but it still lost also.

All three needed at least a 60 per cent "yes" vote to pass.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
