Tuition Increase for EICC

The cost to attend the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges will go up in the fall. This week, the board of trustees approved an increase in tuition of four dollars per credit hour.

Chancellor Don Doucette says the increase, from 175 dollars to 179 dollars per credit hour, is only about two per cent.

"We've tried to keep tuition as low as possible and the increase as low as possible, however we simply need to make sure that our tuition, which is the major source of our operational revenue, keeps up with operational costs."

Even with the increase, tuition for Scott, Clinton, and Muscatine community colleges will be either the lowest or second lowest of the 15 community college districts in Iowa.

Doucette says there are at least a couple of ways students can save money - new students enrolled full-time for the fall can take a class during the summer for free, and full-time students will only pay for their first 12 credit hours allowing them to add another class or two at no cost.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
