As Nahant Marsh in Davenport grows, the Corps of Engineers will help it create a new master plan.
Michelle O'Neill reports, today (Monday), officials from the preserve and the corps announced their partnership for the two-year process.
Executive Director, Brian Ritter, says for years, the Nahant Marsh property was a trap and skeet shooting club. And during the late 1990's, soil and sediment polluted with lead shot were removed from the EPA Superfund Site. The resulting natural preserve is now 20 years old. The Corps of Engineers and Nahant Marsh will update the original master plan, and ask for public feedback.
Two years ago, Nahant Marsh added 40 acres with donations from two families, and about half was farmland. Three-hundred tires have already been removed.
Some of the goals of Nahant Marsh are to create and provide habitat for wildlife, filter water, store flood waters, and teach people about wetlands.
