Salveo Health and Wellness in Canton has received approval from state regulators to begin selling recreational cannabis on Jan. 1 at its current site.

Salveo has sold medical cannabis at 3104 N. Main St. since 2015. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation announced Thursday that the business is one of five approved in the state for same-site sales.

The other approved dispensaries are located in Mundelein, Naperville, Joliet, and Effingham.

The Canton City Council approved zoning for recreational cannabis sales unanimously at its August 6 meeting. The city will charge a $10,000 licensing fee in its local ordinance. The city plans to assess the full three percent additional sales tax allowed on recreational cannabis under the state law.

Starting next year, Illinois residents age 21 and older can possess up to 30 grams of cannabis flower legally. Municipalities cannot ban use, but can regulate the sale and cultivation of cannabis within their borders. Cities and counties across the state are currently hashing out where they will draw those lines.

The IDFPR said it will approve additional same-site licenses as local zoning ordinances allowing them are passed.

The new law also allows the 55 existing medical cannabis dispensaries to apply to sell recreational cannabis at a second site. Milan-based Nature's Treatment of Illinois is applying for a second location in Galesburg. Trinity Compassionate Care Center in Peoria is seeking to sell recreational cannabis at its existing location on N. University.
