Good morning, this is your Wellness Wake-Up Call with University of Illinois Extension.
The holiday season can be both joyful and challenging. As we reflect on the past year, it’s natural to think about life’s challenges or unexpected changes. These reflections can sometimes stir feelings of regret or sadness. One powerful way to navigate these emotions is by practicing gratitude.
Gratitude helps us pause and recognize what is meaningful, whether it’s big milestones, small moments of joy, or even difficult experiences that taught us something valuable. By shifting our focus from problems to possibilities, gratitude strengthens resilience, fosters hope, and supports both mental and physical well-being.
Gratitude is a skill, which grows stronger with practice. Here are two strategies to build on:
Keep a gratitude journal. Create a habit of spending 5–10 minutes daily to reflect and write down what you’re thankful for. Some days you might focus on family, friends, or an accomplishment. Other days, it may be something simple, like a smile from a stranger, a beautiful sunrise, or a kind word from a coworker.
Express appreciation. Verbally thank someone or send a short note or card. A simple, sincere message letting others know how they’ve made a difference can strengthen relationships and lift both of your spirits.
Gratitude helps us feel more positive emotions, lowers stress, and boosts the brain chemicals linked to happiness and well-being. The key is consistency, so start today and carry gratitude with you throughout the holiday season and beyond.
