Cooling Down with Trees

Ways To Subscribe

Planting trees is a fantastic way to cool ourselves down, particularly in urban areas experiencing the heat island effect. Trees have a natural cooling effect, making vegetation a simple and effective way to bring down the temperature in our cities. It can lead to a significant difference in temperature, with shaded surfaces being 20-45 degrees cooler than unshaded ones. Look at a parking lot in the summer; all shaded spots are taken first.

The City of Bettendorf has been noticing this effect. In 1991, the Bettendorf Trees Are Us Committee was established. It addresses tree planting, maintenance, and overall tree health throughout the city. Since its formation, the committee of volunteers has planted over 2,200 trees. This effort has contributed significantly to replanting and establishing the urban canopy earning Bettendorf the Tree City USA Status for 26 consecutive years.

This dedicated group of citizens meet monthly to create inventories and planting proposals within the city. In 2020, the Trees Are Us Committee was awarded the Growth Award by the Iowa Urban Tree Council.

In 2016, the Emerald Ash Borer, after killing millions of ash trees nationwide, arrived in Bettendorf. The Committee is the only volunteer group in the state of Iowa that has implemented a treatment plan to preserve the majority of its ash trees. All properties are evaluated yearly with an on-going treatment of these trees.

The Committee has also played a role in the repopulation of trees along park and recreation trails while at the same time they participate with the city in pruning and mulching. Jason Manful with Bettendorf Park Maintenance can be contacted for more information.

Throughout the Quad Cities, planting and caring for trees offers a natural and effective way to combat the heat island effect by creating cooler, healthier, and more enjoyable urban neighborhoods. Strategic planning and equitable distribution of tree planting can amplify these benefits at buildings, roads, and sidewalks while promoting the well-being of both ourselves and the planet.

Stay cool!
