The first day of Spring was March 20th and summer is right around the corner. Get to know the Mississippi River and surroundings when you join River Action for their 2022 Summer Education Series.
This educational series provides Quad City residents and visitors a chance to experience the Mississippi River by taking them to unique sites to explore the history, wildlife, culture, geology, and other area topics. Each talk is led by a local professional and covers a unique aspect of living along the Mississippi, covering 30 miles of the river and riverfront in the Quad Cities region. Talks take place either on the Channel Cat water taxi or as a Riverine Walk, at specific sites along the riverfront.
River Action is offering 54 programs in 2022. There are several new and several “oldies but goodies” or repeat programs. New topics on the Channel Cat this year include “River Bandits on the Mississippi” with owner Dave Heller, “The Race Between the Iron Horse and the Last Buffalo: 1833-1870” with historian Karen Anderson, and the Mississippi River “Mayors Collaborative Projects” with Anthony Heddlesten, Mayor of Riverdale, Iowa.
New Riverine Walks include from “Floreciente to Sylvan Island: Connecting Neighborhoods with Historic Sites” led by Floreciente leaders, Mary Chappell and Norm Moline, “Green Rooftops” with Teresa Nelson of Roof Top Sedums, and the “Hauberg Estate: a Jens Jensen Landscape Restoration” with Deb Kuntzi.
Participants of the Channel Cat Talks board the water taxi for an hour and a half excursion filled with learning and sightseeing on the Mississippi River. Riverine Walks offer a unique educational experience from land. Participants explore the shoreline on foot during guided walks along the Mississippi River and surrounding sites. Every site, whether on the water or off, is distinctly different and site-specific.
