The entire WVIK listening area is under a Winter Weather Advisory this afternoon.

Meteorologist Jim Hladik with the National Weather Service of the Quad Cities says the area may see one-tenth of an inch of ice.

"[S]ome freezing drizzle is already ongoing in portions of southeast Iowa and west central Illinois, where advisories are already in effect, but for the I-80 corridor and the Quad Cities, our advisory starts at 3 p.m." Hladik said in a phone interview with WVIK. "It's a little bit of a later arrival of the freezing precipitation spreading up from the south in those areas, and probably the last to see will be north of the Highway 30 corridor mid to late afternoon.”

Hladik says the wintry mix should turn to mostly rain this evening. However, the risk remains for patches of ice during the evening commute.

"I know the plows are out there already today with the solutions and brine, and the temperature profiles that we will have in the upper 20s to low 30s will be favorable for that to work, but still, we definitely have to take precautions for slick surfaces, elevated bridges, overpasses, untreated roads, and the hazard of just a drizzle of rain freezing on your windshield," Hladik said.

He advises planning ahead and driving slow this evening. He also mentions that untreated roads may have lingering ice during Thursday morning’s commute.

There is another chance of a wintry mix or snow this Friday night into Saturday.
