The Davenport City Council has again postponed a riverfront hotel development package downtown. Council members voted Wednesday night, Dec. 11th for more time to hash out details of the tax breaks for a 82-room extended-stay Marriott hotel at Third Street and River Drive.
The site would also be home to a mixed-use four-story building with a restaurant, two floors of office space, and an event center on the fourth floor.
During public comment, 3rd Ward resident Cheryl Shagena questioned whom the development would benefit.
"I'm not against development on that corner. I think it would be good to have something nice to look at. But I don't know if I can give it taxpayer money to the owner because I am not positive, one their money is going to stay in Davenport. They can take it to Moline, they can take it to Bettendorf. I can't promise they're going to use any of it in downtown amenities."
Another resident, Paul Vasquez, questioned who intended to benefit from the proposal.
"That development takes tax dollars out and gives them to somebody's pocket, so to me everybody suffers. Yes, it's great to have the things to draw people, but how much money goes down to the shelters, goes down to the sidewalks, goes down to the streets, is it an equal proportion?"
The council voted to postpone their decision until the first Committee of the Whole meeting on January 8.
