The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says three men died in the Mississippi River on Sunday after their boat capsized below the dam at Bellevue, Iowa.

The DNR reports the victims were fishing in a restricted area when a strong backflow current pulled the boat underwater. The men were pulled from the water and taken to shore where two were confirmed dead.

The third was pronounced dead later at Dubuque Medical Center.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies are investigating the drownings, which took place about 25 miles downstream from Dubuque.
