Rivermont Collegiate announces that the teacher and curriculum director Leigh Ann Schroeder is receiving the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Award.

The Fulbright Program takes over eight hundred U.S. citizens to teach abroad. The program aims to bring different international perspectives to the classroom and show how we’re all in this world together. Participants of the program will do a capstone project, which will be a website documenting their adventures on the trip.

Schroeder says that this will be a beneficial experience in her teaching career.

“I’m hoping to gain a lot. You know, even just a cultural perspective of being in a different country, experiencing the food, and just the people and just learning from them," said Schroeder. She also hopes to gain international travel, a better understanding of international students and how they learn from different cultural experiences and more connections.

The application process began in October. It involves writing between eight and ten essays about teaching philosophies, how they will be used in a different classroom setting, and how the program will benefit teachers and students. It also involved two recommendations from a boss and fellow teacher and a resume. The recipients were announced in late July.

The program begins next week with two classes. One class is a virtual class with the state board and the other class with alums of the program. Both will end in December.

Once Schroeder has completed the program, she’s eligible to host a future teacher.

Rivermont Collegiate is a day boarding school. The school has been around for 140 years. The school offers boarding to international students starting as early as eighth grade.
