QC Congregation Celebrates Marriage Equality

Unitarian Universalists

The Supreme Court ruled today that gay marriage is legal everywhere in the United States- and some Quad Cities residents are celebrating. Tonight, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Quad Cities will hold a "standing on the side of love" celebration, in Davenport.
Gay rights activist and founder of Quad-Citians Affirming Diversity, Joyce Wiley, says the court's decision is a "major step" towards LGBT acceptance.

Wiley says when gay marriage was legalized in Iowa, couples came from all over the country to have ceremonies at her church. And now, those couples can move anywhere in the country and have their marriage recognized.

But, she says it will take time for everyone to approve of the new law. Today, the Diocese of Davenport issued a statement saying the Catholic Bishops of Iowa are "saddened" by today's ruling.
Other congregations are celebrating marriage equality, though. In Davenport, the Metropolitan Community Church will hold an equality rally at 6:30 pm.

And the "standing on the side of love celebration" will be held at 7 pm at the Unitarian Church in Davenport.
