Rock Island County

Next year, voters will elect 19 members of the Rock Island County Board instead of 25.

Michelle O'Neill reports this week, the board voted 19 to 3 to reduce the size of the board to 19, with one member from each district.

Board Chair Richard Brunk says the Governance, Health, and Administration Committee decided 19 members will best represent people all across the county.

A new map of Rock Island County board districts cannot be created yet because of the delay in getting final census figures. Brunk says the deadline to have the new map completed is July, but final census data won't be available until September. So the county board is waiting for guidance from the state.

In advisory referenda in 2012 and 2013, Rock Island County voters overwhelmingly approved reorganizing the board to reduce its size.
