Time is running out for employees of Rock Island County who want to take advantage of an early retirement program. Last year, the county board approved offering the incentive to those who've worked for the county for at least 20 years, and who are at least 50 years old.
Human Resources director, Jerry Clyde, says up to 90 people, or about 14 per cent of the total workforce, are expected to sign up by the deadline on Thursday (7/30).
Newer, younger workers will cost less, and help the county save money.
Rock Island County currently has about 650 full-time employees, and Clyde calls the participation by up to 90 people significant.
So will all these vacancies be filled ? Clyde says some retirees will have to be replaced, but the county will look at each position on a case by case basis.
