Good habits all year help drivers avoid paying the consequences of speeding, failing to use seatbelts, and driving while distracted or drunk. That's the message today from law enforcement agencies in the Illinois Quad Cities, right before Memorial Day weekend.

East Moline Police Captain John Reynolds says everyone should make wearing seatbelts an unbreakable habit.
Another good habit for drivers is to put phones and other devices away to prevent crashes and the possibility of jail, injury, or death. Reynolds says even putting phones on vibrate can become a distraction.

For 6 yrs in a row, Illinois has had less than 1000 fatalities annually, and it's because people are buckling up.

Extra police officers will be on patrol through the weekend, looking for speeders. Others will create enforcement zones to check for drunken drivers and make sure everyone is buckled in.
