New Owner for DeWitt Plant

Guardian Industries

A plant near the Quad Cities will soon have a new owner. Koch Industries announced Monday it will buy Guardian Industries which makes a variety of glass products, including at a plant in DeWitt.

Koch has been a minority owner of Guardian for the past four years, and will likely complete the purchase of the shares it doesn't own already early next year.

Guardian is based in Auburn Hills, Michigan and built the plant in DeWitt in 1996. Recently it completed a multi-million dollar expansion. The plant currently produces mirrors, safety glass, and some coated glass products.

Guardian says it employs about 17,000 people and operates facilities in 25 countries. Besides DeWitt, US locations include California, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Ohio. South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
