Years after it started, free tax preparation programs in the Quad Cities are serving more and more residents. The United Way of the Quad Cities offers free tax filing for individuals and families with an income of $57,000 or less.
President Scott Crane says professionals certified by the IRS sit down with people to ask a lot of questions, and then prepare and file their tax returns.
Crane says the Affordable Care Act will complicate the process this year, since everyone is required to buy health insurance.
In recent years, United Way's tax preparation service has grown five to ten percent annually. Last year, staff and volunteers helped more than 6,200 residents.
Starting next week, you can make an appointment at any of the free tax preparation sites in the Quad Cities by going to www.unitedwayqc.org/vita, or by calling 2-1-1.
