Family Museum Earns Autism Center Certification

International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards

The Family Museum in Bettendorf has been recognized for its services for those on the autism spectrum. According to the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, the Museum is now a Certified Autism Center, the first in Iowa to receive the designation.

The staff of the museum had to complete sensory disorder training and pass a comprehensive exam.
Director Kim Kidwell says the museum has consistently trained its staff on how to work with people who are on the autism spectrum.

"We've always had something in place, but this just kind of gives us this that extra boost: just more opportunity to let parents and families know that this is a safe place to bring your child. We've all been trained, we all understand and we'll do our best to make your visit a good one."

The museum has a number of options for people with cognitive disorders.

"We already had provided safe spaces for families should they need them. We have sensory kits here in case families or caregivers should need them with headhpones and various tactile things that they might find helpful."

The International Board started certifying autism centers because there was a need for travel and entertainment options for people with cognitive disorders.
