Salvation Army Christmas Assistance

WVIK News
the Salvation Army Toy Shop, ready for distribution

Christmas has come a few days early for hundreds of local families. Friday they picked up boxes of food and toys at the Salvation Army in Moline and Davenport.

Captain Jeannette Jensen, from the Moline office, says about 300 families signed up for help in Moline, representing probably 1,600 children and adults, with at least that many or more getting help in Davenport.

"The joy of the day is just to see the impact you have on these families. Some are going to cry today out of happiness - they didn't know how Christmas was going to happen otherwise."

All the food and toys were made possible by donations - either at the Red Kettles or to the Salvation Army's toy shop.

Donations to this year's holiday fundraising campaign can be made through early next month.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
