Plans are in the works to move the Galesburg library to a new site. The current building opened in 1961, and Library Director Harriet Zipfel says the board of trustees has approved the purchase of two buildings downtown, about five blocks from the current library. The library has bought property between 47 and 51 South Academy Street.
Zipfel says the new library will be double the size of the current building, at approximately 70,000 square feet. And it will have a teen area, conference rooms, study rooms, and new technology like self-checkout. Zipfel says the Illinois state budget impasse has slowed the process of moving to a new location, but she estimates the new Galesburg library will be completed within two years.
