Two Sculptures Unveiled in Downtown Davenport

A 20-foot, 500 pound sculpture and a wooden "throne" now decorate the RiverCenter in downtown Davenport. Today, the Downtown Davenport Partnership celebrated the unveiling of two new sculptures.

As part of an effort to bring inter-active art downtown, the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce commissioned Irish wood artist, Liam O'Neill, and local artist, Dean Kugler.

O'Neill came to Davenport in August and started working on a 120-year-old damaged sugar maple tree from Vander Veer Park, provided by city arborist, Chris Johnson.

Dean Kugler sculpted a 20-foot man out of steel, fiberglass, and cement. The man has wings and broken shackles. He says the idea came from a dream, but he hopes others can relate to the symbolism.

"Whether it's religious, personal, or anything else, then that's how it applies to people who come here, because it's not specific to the artist or anything else. It's definitely intimate to the viewer."

Both sculptures will be on display at the RiverCenter in Davenport indefinitely.
