Annual Report

WVIK, Quad Cities NPR
FY2016 Annual Report

The Quad Cities' News Source
Connecting Communities Conversation is the exchange of ideas, thoughts, and information by two or more people. For WVIK, creating a space for these exchanges is the very core of what we do every day on-air, on line, and in person.

As we make our way through 2016, a Presidential election year, WVIK is committed to enhancing our already robust coverage of the issues and candidates on local, state and national ballots. We will explore new ideas for integrating our on-air and online coverage with social media and in-person events. Here are a few of the things we have planned: daily news coverage; regular segments with our political coorespondent Chris Whitt; a debate watching party at CityView Celebrations; a visit from NPR’s Don Gonyea; and a trip to see The Capitol Steps at the Heritage Center in Dubuque.

The WVIK newsroom took top honors this year from the Illiniois Associated Press Broadcasters Association (IAPBA) and the Iowa Broadcast News Association, winning 15 awards. News Editor Michelle O'Neill won Best Reporter for Local Radio in the IAPBA 2015 contest. This follows on the heels of three consecutive years winning First Place in other Local Radio categories: the Best Hard News Feature for "Illinois Victims' Rights Proposal" in 2014, Best Series for "Immigrants and Driving" in 2013, and Best Investigative Report for "Cameras and Mics in Iowa Courts" in 2012. Michelle also topped the Farm and Agribusiness category this year with a feature on "Water Quality and Farming" and in General Reporting for a feature on "QC Campuses Fight Sexual Violence." O'Neill was also awarded for Overall Excellence in Reporting for several stories she submitted on the presidential campaign, a local murder trial, and the John Deere Classic. Michelle brought home six additional second place, third place, and honorable mentions from the IBNA. Commenting on her Best Reporter award, the judges said, "Michelle demonstrated exceptional reporting and anchoring skills. We are very impressed by her efforts."

WVIK News Director Herb Trix won first place from the IBNA in the Feature category for "Fighting Cancer with Art," as well as second place in Public Affairs for "Midwest Week," and third place in Overall Excellence in Reporting for a group of stories, including Deere earnings, a local murder trial, and The Lodge closing. Amy Helpenstell Fellowship The IBNA awarded the WVIK newsroom third place in Political Coverage by Herb Trix, Michelle O'Neill, and Amy Helpenstell Fellow Sarah Ritter. Herb Trix and Michelle O'Neill also won second place in Overall Excellence in Reporting.
