That's because this election year, the Iowa Democratic party's contest will no longer be first in the nation.

Scott County Chair Kay Pence says it's a big change for Iowa democrats not to vote first at local caucuses. Instead, voters will cast ballots by mail, and the results won't be released until Super Tuesday, March 5th.

"They can apply online or they can fill out a paper form to get their presidential preference card, and those won't be put in the mail until January. And people have all the way up until February to fill them out and return them. And it'll be like ranked choice voting. Currently four candidates, or four selection options."

Registered Democrats can fill out an online or paper form to request a presidential preference card. Pence says they will be mailed to voters starting on January 12th.

"And I am really excited about doing it this way. Because before, the caucuses, you know, there were a lot of people who were excluded. They couldn't be at one location on a January evening. They might have work or mobility issues or whatever. They can still participate now."

Despite the changes, Pence says Scott County Democrats will hold in-person caucuses on January 15th at Davenport North High School. They'll elect central committee members, delegates, and discuss the party platform. The party also needs volunteers to help out on caucus night.
