WVIK News

The Handicapped Development Center in Davenport will now be known as Empowering Abilities.

President Jeff Ashcraft announced the name change Thursday at the
annual Davenport Police Association's Thanksgiving Feast.

"Empowering is about being independent, and empowering is about being somebody who sets their own course, and helps decide their own future, which is what all of us want, right?"

"And abilities, it's not about what we can't do, it is illustrative about what we can do."

Ashcraft says the term, "handicapped," is outdated. The nonprofit wanted a new name to better represent what it does, and how active its clients are in the community.

The organization had its previous name for over 50 years. Along with the new name, Empowering Abilities also unveiled its new logo.

Rachel graduated from Michigan State University's J-School and has a background in broadcast and environmental journalism. Before WVIK, she worked for WKAR Public Media, Great Lakes Now, and more. In her free time, she likes to cook, hike, and hang out with her cat.
