Reyna Torres Medivil laid a wreath at the memorial that honors eight soldiers from immigrant families in a small Quad Cities neighborhood who gave their lives in World War II and Korea.
Medivil said she came to pay homage to these young men and their families.
"Hero Street symbolizes many things common to our community - not only the resilience, the strength, the willing to sacrifice - and that is something that is part of the core of what our community, the community of Mexican origin, brings to this country."
Also speaking at the ceremony was Colonel Daniel Mitchetll, Commander of the Rock Island Arsenal Garrison.
"It's because of men like these that grew up on these streets, lived on these streets, and deployed from these streets, that doors of opportunity in the military are open to a myriad of people today. They made us strong before we understood that diversity is a strength."
In all 87 soldiers from 22 families from Hero Street served their country in the two wars. Plus many more, men and women, in the wars and conflicts since then.
