City Council considers options for Sunset Marina

The Rock Island City Council is exploring several different options for Sunset Marina.

2nd Ward Alderman Randy Hurt hopes the council decides the city should retain ownership of the marina, rather then to sell or lease it.

"In my opinion, and I've done quite a bit of looking over the stuff, is that we do a phased rebuild of a smaller scale marina. So we have some nice entities, which would mean increased slip rates for the boaters, but in order to have proper maintenance there is going to have to, inevitably, be a price increase."

Hurt says Sunset Marina should be brought up to modern standards, and that would require updated fees. He also says the federal money for the project will expire in September, but he hopes the city can get an extension.

"I think really, it stems from years of kicking the can down the road. You know, we just haven't kept up on maintenance. It's just been, 'oh we'll do it whenever.' And now, here we are, now is whenever."

On March 27th, the City Council will meet again to discuss the marina. The meeting will include a proposal about the work that is needed, as well as how much dredging will be needed for the project.
