MidAmerican Energy has started an experiment to find out if it could switch to electric vehicles for its heavy-duty fleet. Tuesday it unveiled three all-electric utility bucket trucks to help service its electric system.

The company says they can drive up to 135 miles on a full charge, and that should be enough for a full day's work because the aerial lift uses a separate battery.

MidAmerican already has about 100 electric vehicles, mainly cars and minivans, but this is the first attempt to electrify its medium and heavy-duty vehicles.

The company says one benefit customers will notice is how quiet the new trucks are when crews are working in neighborhoods at night.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
