Kirk Anderson, Chief Financial Officer, says these courts in Lincoln Park will be built with the future of the college in mind.
"Anytime we can provide additional space, or create additional space, it just gives us greater options down the road to expand. Particularly on the academic quad, for any buildings we might need in the future."
Right now, the college's tennis courts are located behind Evald Hall, but they're old and need repairs, so, Augustana decided to replace them.
The city will own the new tennis courts but Anderson says the college will pay for construction, and maintenance.
"We're putting up the capital for all of it. As a result we have, we'll call it exclusive rights, to the courts when the school is in session for our varsity athletics."
The ten-year agreement also includes lights for the courts, new restrooms, and bleachers. The plan was approved by city council last week. Renovations will start in the spring, and could be completed by Labor Day.
