Moline School District Shares Joy

Once again, students and staff at Moline High School are raising money for children in need in the district.

The annual "Share Joys" campaign is being held this week, including today's signature event, the donut eating contest.

Students and faculty form teams and raise $500 to participate, and then compete to see who can eat a dozen donuts the fastest.

Co-director of student activities Lanae Harding says Share Joys helps a variety of people in the community.

"Our district has a lot of lower income students, a lot of our students are on free or reduced lunch. This opportunity for them to purchase the clothing that they need is just a really awesome thing."

Last year, Moline High School students and staff raised over $62,000. The money helped more than 300 children buy new winter clothes at the JC Penney store in Moline.

The other co-director of student activities is Sylvia Salinas.

"I always tell my kids, it doesn't matter if we break any goals. At the end of the day any little bit helps. At the end of the day I always make sure I'm like, '$20 always goes a long way.' I always try and engage the civic duty and where this is all going to go, how this is going to impact."

Donations are still being accepted for Share Joys through https://moline.revtrak.net/share-joys/ until tomorrow.
