With help from the state, a study will soon begin on how to improve a busy traffic route in the Illinois Quad Cities.

The Bi-State Regional Commission has received a grant for a consultant to look at the Andalusia Road - Indian Bluff Road Corridor.

Planning Director Gena McCullough says says the eight mile corridor runs through Rock Island, Rock Island County, Milan, and Moline, and carries up to 10,000 vehicles per day.

And nearly 7,000 people from all over the area work at companies along the corridor.

"So we're looking at improving the corridor for commuting, also improving it for moving freight in and out. It's in close proximity to Interstate 280, US 150, and US 6."

The consultant will look at whether more lanes are needed, including turn lanes, can trucks easily access the various businesses, crash statistics, and even the need for sidewalks and bike lanes.

"Can we make improvements for folks who may not have the ability to own a car but who work in that corridor to be able to get from their home to that work location using public transit."

McCullough says the study will take two years to complete.

The study will cost 200,000 dollars, with 160,000 dollars from the state and 40,000 from the four local governments.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
