The city of Bettendorf and the Scott County Family Y are working on plans for a major recreation project.

Called "The Landing," it would include a new water park and new outdoor ice rink, and converting the Life Fitness Center into a youth recreation center.

Kim Kidwell, Director of Culture and Recreation for the city, says plans now call for Bettendorf and the YMCA to build a water park, and replace the city's pool, Splash Landing.

"And in this agreement the YMCA will operate the pool. It will still be owned by the city but they will run it, operate it, they'll provide staffing, day-to-day maintenance, and they will take all the profits and all the losses."

Kidwell says the estimated cost is 18.7 million dollars - with one-third from the city, one-third from the Y, and the rest from private gifts.

"And then together we have rounded up private money from grants and some presentations made in collaboration to different private industries in the Quad Cities, so they have also committed a third to the project."

The new ice rink, replacing Frozen Landing, would be owned and operated by the city, and cost up to 3 million dollars. That money has not yet been raised.

Kidwell says if the projects are all approved, possibly next month, then construction could start next year, and open in 2024.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
