Probably Another Summer Without the Beach at West Lake Park

A popular swimming and boat rental site in the Quad Cities will probably not re-open this summer. After two years of work, dredging and improving the lakes in West Lake Park, there isn't enough water in the main lake, Lake of the Hills.

Roger Kean, Executive Director of Scott County Conservation, says the lake is now less than half full thanks to a drought during the past six to eight months.

"It went well and we were happy with the work that was done but all during the project we couldn't get it to quit raining The project actually took a season longer than what we had anticipated but it was because of the rain. And then as soon as the project was finished and we closed the valve, we experienced a drought."

But that's not the only problem. They're also having a hard time finding enough seasonal workers, especially qualified lifeguards.

"Currently we have to staff both Scott County Park Pool and the beach at West Lake, and right now it looks like we're probably only going to be able to staff the pool at Scott County Park."

Kean says it's possible, that with enough rain, they may be able to open boat rental in West Lake Park for part of the season.

Up to a half-million people use the park each year.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois. While a graduate student in the Public Affairs Reporting Program at the University of Illinois at Springfield (then known as Sangamon State University), he got his first taste of public radio, covering Illinois state government for WUIS. Here in the Quad Cities, Herb worked for WHBF Radio before coming to WVIK in 1987. Herb also produces the weekly public affairs feature Midwest Week – covering the news behind the news by interviewing reporters about the stories they cover.
