Knox College now has a headstart in its effort to raise money for a new art building. Today the college in Galesburg announced the largest gift from living donors in its 177-year history. Dick and Joan Whitcomb of Atlanta Georgia will give 5 million dollars, and be the lead donors for the project.
Currently studio art and art history are located in the Ford Center for the Fine Arts. Knox is currently selecting an architect, and design work should begin later this spring.
Joan Whitcomb graduated from the college in 1956, and Dick Whitcomb in 1957, and both majored in business administration. He is the founder of Gypsum Management and Supply, the nation's largest independent distributor of specialty building materials. In the past, they have given money for scholarships and the renovation of Alumni Hall at Knox, and are long-time supporters of the arts in Atlanta.
