Blues Zones Project Kickoff

A year-long effort to improve the health of people living in Muscatine is underway. The Blue Zones Project held a kickoff Tuesday night.

One of the leaders of the project is Andrew Anderson - he says their goal is to promote exercise and a healthy diet, but also social connections and what he calls "living with purpose."

"Healthy living goes far beyond just having a healthy diet or getting enought exercise. It's a whole picture - how satisfied you are withyour life and how much you feel you're living in your purpose."

Anderson says residents of Muscatine can join a walking group, and participate in other activities.

"For example, there's some healthy cooking classes - to learn healthy cooking but also to form social networks so we get to know other people who want to have a healthier lifestyle as well."

The Blue Zones Project is sponsored by Wellmark Blue Cross - Blue Shield, and is also being held at 9 other sites in Iowa, including Cedar Rapids, Sioux City, Mason City, Cedar Falls, Waterloo, Spencer, and Iowa City.
