Water Rate Hike Takes Effect

The cost of water in the Iowa Quad Cities and Clinton has gone up. Today the Iowa American Water Company implemented an interim rate hike of 8.4 per cent. And for the average residential customer that means their montly bill will increase $2.65, to $34.24.

The interim hike was announced last month by the company when it filed for an overall increase of nearly 19 1/2 per cent.

The Iowa Utilities Board has up to ten months to rule on that request, and if the board awards Iowa American less than the interim increase, then the company will have to refund the money to its customers.

It says the rate hikes are necessary to keep up with rising costs, and to reimburse it for the many major improvements it's made in the past two years in the Iowa Quad Cities and Clinton.
