A new apartment building has opened in downtown Davenport, and it's already full. The grand opening of the Kerker Lofts, at Iowa and Fifth streets, was celebrated today (Thurs).
Mayor Bill Gluba cut the ribbon this afternoon. He says developments like this have helped the city move toward a "critical mass" of people needed downtown to spur the creation of new businesses.
Joe Alexander, President of the Alexander Company which renovated the building, says his company specializes in downtown projects and renovating historical structures.
He says buildings like this, offer something for young professionals.
The 100 year old building cost 4 million dollars to re-develop and has 18 1-bedroom units. Rents at the Kerker Lofts start at 700 dollars a month.
