Rock Island native Caroline Louise Walker recently published her debut novel Man of the Year, which explores the dark undercurrents in the life of Dr. Robert Hart as his life slowly spirals out of control, despite his intense desire to present himself as a model of perfection and competence.
Man of the Year is published by Gallery Books, a division of Simon & Schuster. The protagonist's exterior appearance belies the inward chaos of his life as he fails to fully see and engage with the other people in his life. Intriguing and suspenseful, you won’t want to put this book down as it barrels towards its surprising conclusion.
Listen to our conversation here with Caroline Louise Walker, as she discusses her motivation for writing this book, how it felt to write a male character’s perspective in the first person narrative, and why it is important for people to give themselves permission to write.
A novel shower will be held on Monday, July 1, at the Moline Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Come celebrate with her as she signs books and gives a reading. There is also a gift registry on Amazon for those wishing to contribute school supplies, which will be donated to the Rock Island–Milan School District, which Caroline Louise Walker attended. The Moline Public Library is located at 3210 41st Street.
