Now that one new bridge across the Mississippi River is under construction, some long range planners are beginning to think about building another new bridge. But this one would be for the railroads.
Gena McCullough, from the Bi-State Regional Commision, says this week a consultant presented its findings to members of the Transportation Policy Committee about where a new railroad bridge might be built. That's because Government Bridge and the Crescent Bridge are both more than 100 years old.
"They've lived a long life. They do have some limitations because of their age and it does impact freight movement through our area. So I think it's something that, at least we opened the conversation with the railroads, and it will continue."
The consultant came up with three possible crossing sites - one would be between Bettendorf and Riverdale, and East Moline, another might be at Government Bridge, and a third would be a replacement for the Crescent Bridge that's just downstream from Centennial Bridge.
