Free Tax Preparation: How the VITA Program Helps Low-Income Individuals

In this episode, we dive into two fascinating topics: the United Way of the Quad Cities Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and the renovations taking place at the Carnegie Library building in downtown Moline, now home to the Sound Conservatory.

Our guest, Max Bigalk, sheds light on the VITA program, providing us with all the important details. He explains the eligibility criteria, the locations where assistance is available, and the scheduling process. With appointments running from February 1st to April 12th, this program is a wonderful opportunity for individuals making under $64,000 annually to receive free tax preparation assistance. Max highlights the dedicated volunteers involved, including tax professionals, students, and retirees who are certified to handle federal, Iowa, and Illinois tax law changes. Last year alone, over 3,300 returns were prepared through this program. If you're interested, make sure to schedule your appointment soon, as slots fill up quickly!

Next, we shift our focus to the Sound Conservatory's exciting move into the historic Carnegie Library building in Moline. Andrzej Kozlowski, the founder of the Sound Conservatory, walks us through the renovations taking place in this iconic building. From lesson rooms to a piano showroom, a grand recital hall, and even a restoration workshop, this new space promises endless possibilities. Andrzej expresses his love for the acoustics and rich history of the former library. Looking ahead, the Sound Conservatory has big plans for 2023, including expanding teaching space, hiring additional staff, completing renovations, and hosting a range of performances. Currently, visitors can enjoy an immersive mystery theater experience called "The Stacks" on weekends, thanks to a collaboration with a local arts group. The former library is buzzing with activity, breathing new life into its historic halls.

Tune in to this episode to learn more about the VITA program and the incredible transformation of the Carnegie Library building into a vibrant hub for music and arts in downtown Moline.
