Back in 2001, the National Association of Sports Officials published a 42-page manifesto titled 'How to Get and Keep Officials.' It reported that 90 percent of states and sanctioning organizations faced a shortage of officials in nearly every sport.

Now, 16 years later, the situation hasn't improved. In fact, the shortage is now worse in both Illinois and Iowa.

High school basketball in Illinois has always been a popular spectator sport.  But you might not know that from the recent state tournaments.

Bettendorf is working with a developer to build a large sports and entertainment complex. Today, the city and Doug Kratz announced the $45 million project called, BettPlex.

Michelle O'Neill reports it'll be located on Forest Grove Road near Middle Road and I-80.

Kratz serves on the board of Triumph Bancorp and before 2013, was vice chair of Triumph Community Bank in Bettendorf. He says the complex will feature indoor fields that will accomodate a variety of sports, from baseball to wrestling. Eight basketball, pickleball, and volleyball courts will also be part of the 265,000-square-foot building. Sand volleyball courts will be built inside and outside.

Augustana College

The coach who built Augustana College's men's lacrosse program has resigned. Kyle Hart, the college's first ever head lacrosse coach, will not return for the upcoming season.

Hart was hired in 2010. He led the men's team to the NCAA Division Three Tournament last spring. The Vikings finished second in the 2015 inaugural season, with a 14 to 5 overall record.

Hart has accepted a similar position at Wheaton College in Massachusetts.

Assistant Coach Zack Olsen will take over as acting head coach.

Actor and comedian Bill Murray will pack up his clubs and travel to the Quad Cities next week. He'll play in the John Deere Classic pro-am on Wednesday morning, with D.A. Points, at the TPC Deere Run in Silvis.

Quad Cities residents can now visit a traveling Smithsonian exhibit, celebrating sports. "Hometown Teams" is now on display at the Rock Island Main Library. The interactive exhibit combines national and local sports footage, photos, and memorabilia. This is the sound from one of the videos.

Television screens, ipads, flip-books, and links to apps are included in each "Hometown Teams" display. Visitors can even smell the food from one Pittsburgh ball park, by squeezing a fake mustard bottle.
