Quad Cities COVID-19 Update

It's been two years since health officials started warning the public about SARS-CoV2, the novel coronavirus that causes the COVID-19 infection.

Today, 3/9/2022, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported 92 new cases of COVID-19 and two new deaths in Scott County. Rock Island County is scheduled to release its latest numbers on Friday, 3/11/2022. (And under "related content" below, find the first two WVIK News reports from two years ago.)

On Friday, 3/4/2022, Rock Island County reported three new COVID-19 deaths had occurred over the last seven days compared to six the previous week. On 3/2/2022, the Iowa Department of Public Health also reported three deaths in Scott County. So the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the Quad Cities was 856, with 478 in Rock Island County and 375 in Scott County.

Rock Island County also reported 110 new cases, compared to 125 the previous week. Last week, in Scott County, the case number jumped to 603 compared to 145 the week before. The total number of reported cases in the Quad Cities totals more than 72,000, with over 31,000 in Rock Island County and more than 40,000 in Scott County.

Nine Rock Island County residents were reported to be in the hospital with the coronavirus infection compared 19 the previous week. The 7-day average test positivity rate was 3.9.% compared to 3.6% the previous week.

Also according to the CDC, Rock Island County's COVID-19 transmission rate fell to "substantial" from "high" where it had been since August. Scott County's transmission rate continues to be "high."

A different CDC statistic shows Rock Island County's COVID "community level" has dropped from "medium" to "low." Scott County's has risen to "medium" compared to "low" a week ago.
