The Scott County Family YMCA has gone public with plans to build a new downtown Davenport location.
Collin Schopp reports yesterday, it announced a fundraising campaign.
Yesterday, the YMCA announced it has already raised $7.2 million in the major gift phase of its campaign. That's more than half of its $12 million goal for the project.
CEO Brad Martell says the existing YMCA building is more than 50 years old, too small, and doesn't meet members' needs.
A few years ago, the Scott County YMCA board agreed a new building is the best choice. The YMCA hired a consultant which conducted a survey. And Martell says the results show a larger building would allow the YMCA to attract and serve thousands more members.
The plans for the new YMCA in Davenport include three floors, two swimming pools, a full-size gym, and an indoor track. It'll be located on the corner of 4th Street and River Drive, near the Quad City Times.
Martell hopes donations to the campaign will reach $12 million within the next nine months.
