For the holiday weekend, look forward to races, parades, and politicians in the Quad Cities.
In downtown Rock Island, activities for the 24th annual Xtream Rock Island Grand Prix begin Friday afternoon when the streets will be closed, and pits for the racers will open. The racing begins Saturday and continues through Sunday afternoon.
Two Labor Days parades will be held on Monday - in Rock Island and East Moline.
- in Rock Island, the 34th annual parade will travel along 18th Avenue, beginning at 33rd Street, and start at 9:30 am.
- the East Moline parade, now in its 35th year, begins at 11 am on Monday and will travel west along 15th Avenue, starting at 15th Street.
Politicians will march in the parades, but the main "political" event will be held on Monday when the Rock Island County democrats host their 51st annual Salute to Labor picnic at Illiniwek Park in Hampton.
The featured speaker will be democratic gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker. Joining him will be his lieutenant governor running mate Juliana Stratton; plus democratic candidates for attorney general (Kwame Raoul), Secretary of State (Jesse White), Treasurer (Michael Frerichs), and Comptroller (Susana Mendoza).
Many local candidates will also attend.
