Some local residents could qualify for brand new windows, doors, or paint. This week, residents can apply for the Healthy Homes Lead Program, which tests houses for lead and removes any hazards for free.
Moline Community Development Program Manager, KJ Whitley, says residents of Moline, Rock Island, East Moline, and Sterling can apply. To qualify, a person must meet certain income guidelines and have at least one child under the age of six living in the house.
Whitley says if a house is tested positive for lead, a crew will replace windows, doors, paint, steps, or whatever is necessary to abate the hazard. If the family has to stay in a hotel during construction, the cost will be covered.
The US Department of Housing and Urban Development is funding the $2.5 million program, which should help about 150 people.

Whitley says the cities also have $200,000 to remove hazards that are not lead-related, such as water damage.
Residents can apply for the Healthy Homes Lead Program at Moline City Hall today from 2 until 7 pm, and tomorrow at Rock Island City Hall from 1 until 6 pm.
