The I-74 bridge project team has awarded a demolition contract for the old bridge to a familiar company -- the Helm Group, also known as Civil Constructors.

George Ryan, Corridor Manager, says earlier this month, the Iowa Department of Transportation approved the Helm Group for the project. And the project team met with Helm representatives last week.

Helm has already built large parts of the interstate highway for the new, I-74 bridge project, including the east-bound and west-bound viaducts and piers in Bettendorf.

Ryan says preliminary parts of the project may begin in September. But the actual demolition cannot take place until the Mississippi River is closed to navigation, probably next winter.

The demolition contract is worth nearly $23.3 million.
