Humility Homes and Services, with help from the Quad Cities Housing Council, will open the Winter emergency Shelter at its year-round shelter in Davenport, at 1016 West 5th Street.
Humility Assistant Director Christie Adamson says since the pandemic began, many of their workers have worked remotely, and that's left space available in the basement of the shelter.
"And so we renovated our basement so that it's no longer offices. We added additional bathrooms down there and tore down a lot of walls so the increased space will actually be in our shelter and will not be located anywhere else."
In recent winters, during the most extreme cold, up to 70 people a night have stayed in the emergency shelter. It mainly serves adult men and women, but families are welcome too.
"So when we say literally anyone who is potentially going to find themselves in an unsafe situation sleeping outside, they are welcome to come to our shelter."
The emergency shelter officially opens Wednesday, and will be open through mid-April. Each night it opens at 9 pm, and closes at 7 am.
